Henry Draper was an anti-aircraft gunner in the 343 Heavy AKAK Battery 109 Regiment. He was trained at Sandwich golf course and in July 1944 boarded a Liberty ship in Southend to travel to Normandy.
Henry gives a brief recap of his journey across the channel, which was fairly uneventful except the for the disembarkation, which involved jumping from the Liberty ship to a tank landing craft – he later found out that those who didn’t jump were thrown across.
His regiment landed at Courseulles-sur-mer and was deployed both as field artillery against German soldiers, and in an anti-aircraft role to protect supply lines.
Henry’s short, but intriguing, recollection of his time in Normandy ended with his involvement in the siege of Dunkirk.
