Tom Neil was one of the RAF's most successful fighter pilots and was credited with the downing of 17 enemy aircraft. After the Battle of Britain he went on to see combat in Malta before returning to the UK to lead a squadron flying Spitfires over the Channel and elsewhere during 1943. Subsequently he was attached to the American 9th Air Force and in 1944, he flew sorties during the invasion of Normandy.
