A Lost Recording Rediscovered
In 2014, Legasee Educational Trust received a rare oral history recording featuring three First World War veterans: George Little, Henry Maddox, and Patrick Corrigan. Recorded in the 1960s by a doctor in Essex, this 27-minute conversation captures their personal memories of the Great War—offering a rare, unfiltered insight into life on the front line.
This discovery led to a unique teaching resource, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, where students can engage in investigative genealogy. In partnership with Colchester Academy, Legasee developed a five-lesson programme that encourages young people to research these men’s identities while exploring the realities of war through their voices.
I thoroughly enjoyed the war, I used to like the sing songs and what have you, the esprit de core of the men.
