Introduction to this collection
Since 1990, British forces have been deployed in conflicts across the globe, responding to shifting geopolitical challenges and humanitarian crises. This period has seen Britain engage in coalition-led operations, counterinsurgency campaigns, and peacekeeping efforts, often in complex and rapidly evolving environments.
The end of the Cold War in 1991 reshaped global security, but new threats emerged in its wake. British forces played a key role in conflicts such as the Gulf War (1990–91) and later in Iraq (2003–11) and Afghanistan (2001–21), where they faced prolonged insurgencies. Peacekeeping and stabilisation efforts also became a defining feature of British military operations, from the Balkans in the 1990s to missions in Sierra Leone and Libya.
At home, British troops continued to be deployed in Northern Ireland until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which largely ended decades of conflict.
Projects
Although Legasee has interviewed many veterans involved in modern-day conflicts, these have not yet been part of a dedicated funded project.
If you would like to see Legasee develop a project focusing on a specific modern conflict, please get in touch to share your interest. Your input will help us prioritise future work and strengthen funding applications to ensure these important stories are recorded and shared.
