The Hawker Hurricane had some major drawbacks as a fighter plane. Not only was it slower than both the Spitfire and the German 109E, its .303 machine guns were like pea shooters especially compared to the Messerschmitt's 20mm canon. That they achieved a higher success ratio, was partly due to the introduction of incendiary ammunition.
