Both the Dorsetshire and Cornwall were sunk by 53 Japanese bombers, 320 km south-west of Ceylon. Their survivors were subject to machine-gun fire from Japanese planes and 30+ hours floating in shark-infested waters before they were rescued. Miraculously 1,122 men from a total of 1,546 survived the attack.
